Mining companies can be controlled by our elected government. Proper planning can allow mining in areas where it does not compete with agriculture, water resources and a resident population. While coal mining has certainly boosted our economy it has done so at the expense of our ability to survive and prosper in the future. Gas extraction is developing as a threat of equal magnitude.
